We Are Pop vol. 7

Jakarta, Dec 28, 2008.

Saya datang pas sekali sebelum Whistler Post tampil. Niatnya sih mau dari siang tapi apa daya karena satu dan lain hal Saya baru bisa datang jam 7-an. Sampai di Hey Folks Saya kaget karena ramai sekali. Lalu Saya segera menyusup ke tempat teman Saya berada karena memang tujuan awalnya hendak menyaksikan sahabat saya, Tania beraksi di atas panggung mini “We Are Pop!”.

Whistler Post bermain dengan sangat baik dan komentar ini cukup obyektif tanpa embel-embel pertemanan di dalamnya. Saya cukup menikmati sajian efek-efek gitar dan kegalauan yang disajikan Whistler Post. Sayang di lagu ketiga suara vokal agak tidak terdengar karena sebelum itu ada beberapa suara feedback yang mengganggu sehingga suara vokal harus dikecilkan sedikit.

Setelah Whistler Post, gantian sang empunya Hey Folks naik ke atas panggung. Saya tidak terlalu mendengarkan karena pada saat ini sedang berada di luar Hey Folks! Bercengkrama bersama teman-teman yang hadir juga pada malam itu. Permainan Ballads Of The Cliché agak terkesan galau, mungkin karena ini merupakan pertunjukan terakhir sang Keyboardis, Fino Zaini.

Dan setelah Ballads of the Cliche, hadirlah sebuah band dengan nama yang ada Lily-lilinya (maaf Saya benar-benar lupa namanya). Gosipnya dari Mbak Sari, White Shoes and the Couples Company, band ini bagus dan musiknya seperti Radiohead tapi Nona Sari-nya sendiri belum pernah melihat langsung. Anyways, karena adanya panggilan dari seorang teman yang berada di luar, Saya segera menuju ke luar lagi padahal tadinya sudah stand by di sebelah panggung akustik. Sayup-sayup terdengar lagu-lagu yg dibawakan mengiringi peristiwa makan kacang polong yg dibeli sama Mbak Mela, White Shoes and the Couples Company, diiringi komentar teman Saya yang selalu berkata "emo..." saat menyimak lagu yang sedang dibawakan

Terakhir, yang telah dinantikan hampir semua penonton pun tiba. Penampilan kelas dunia hadir ke atas panggung kecil We Are Pop! Yup, White Shoes and the Couples Company bermain dengan sangat bagus meskipun ada sedikit kesalahan-kesalahan yang ditutupi dengan baik sehingga hampir tak ada maknanya. Selama berada di atas panggung terlihat mereka semua bermain maksimal, terutama Tuan Ale yang sampai melompat-lompat bak Sondre Lerche saat bermain live di Jakarta. Performance apik ini kemudian ditutup oleh permintaan penonton agar White Shoes menambahkan satu lagu lagi malam itu.

So, meskipun gw cuma melihat beberapa band saja, menurut Saya, We Are Pop! kali ini sungguh menyenangkan. Bagaimana dengan Anda?

Journey To A Secret Gig: The Whitest Boy Alive Concert covering up for Jens Lekman

Sat 6 Dec – JENS LEKMAN KORTEDELA BEAUTY CENTER ASIAN TOUR 2008

On Saturday morning we had received the word from our dear friend that Jens is not coming but by then we just hoped that it was only a hoax that Jens was actually going to be there. So we did come although we had been informed that Whitest Boy Alive was playing in Jens' place. Yet, I really had no idea about their songs and still hoped that Jens would actually come at the last minutes.

After getting into the gig place, auditorium Radio Republik Indonesia, we were now sure that Jens is not coming. Sad, of course, but we were already there so we decided to watch Whitest Boy Alive which was also the time when I realized that the vocalist is KOC's Erland Oye. I had listened to their songs on the way to Bandung btw so I kinda already got the picture how the music would be. The concert was opened by a "not very opening" band called Astrolab. Don't get me wrong for they did play good. It's just that having shoegaze music to open a somewhat indiepop concert is not really a dramatic entrance. After Astrolab, we were entertained by Hollywood No Body with their somewhat Nouvelle Vague performance, two thumbs up for them. The third performer of the night was Homogenic. It's amazing how they still could entertain me although I've watched them performing a lot. And after that came the Whitest Boy Alive.


The Whitest Boy Alive opened the show nicely with their comical lyric (or should I say, Oye's comical lyric) which then continued by Burning which really made me dance to the beat. Their stage act was totally entertaining and filled with great stage act. There was actually a little "accident" in which the bass cable was broken but it was not really a problem because they could cover it up nicely. They also did great cover of Robin S' Show Me Love and Portishead's Glory Box in which Oye sang and laid eyes on me (I wish hahaha). There was also a jam session in which Oye sang in Norwegian and dedicated the song for Rio of White Shoes and the Couples Company. Anyways, two thumbs up for The Whitest Boy Alive because they were willing to perform for us Jens Lekman disapointed fans and I did have fun dancing to their beat although deep down there's still a wish that one day, if he could, Jens would perform here in Indonesia.

Digging The Ivy Scene

Ivy adalah band indiepop New York yang anggotanya ada 3 orang - Andy Chase, Adam Schlesinger dan Dominique Durand. Musiknya sudah pasti indiepop dengan vokal wanita yang enak-enak gimana gitu hihihi. Nah pas awal-awal, si Dominique itu gak mau masuk Ivy karena kalo menurut Dominique, musiknya Ivy "nggak dia banget deh" tapi pada akhirnya, Andy dengan kekuatan cintanya berhasil meracuni Dominique untuk masuk ke bandnya ini.

Singel pertama yang dikeluarkan Ivy berjudul Get Enough dan segera menjadi single of the week-nya Melody Maker di UK. Kesuksesan itu diikuti dengan release EP pertama mereka pada tahun 1994 dan pada hari Valentine di tahun berikutnya, Ivy mengeluarkan album pertamanya yang bertajuk Realistic.

Album kedua Ivy berjudul Apartment Life (October 1996). Album ini selain merupakan perkenalan pertama gw pada Ivy juga merupakan album yang mendongkrak popularitas Ivy. Nggak tanggung-tanggung, James Iha-nya Smashing Pumpkins yang ternyata adalah fans berat Ivy ikutan ngisi backing vocal dan gitar di lagu Back In Our Town.

Pada tahun 2001, Ivy kembali dengan LP berjudul Long Distance. Album ini menambah suksesnya dengan dimasukkan beberapa tracknya sebagai soundtrack dari beberapa film dan serial TV, termasuk di antaranya Shallow Hall.

Pada tahun 2002, di bawah label Minty Fresh, Ivy mengeluarkan album lagi dengan judul Guestroom. Di album ini Ivy mendedikasikan 10 lagu musisi-musisi sumber inspirasi mereka. Album ini terus terang membuat gw yakin kalo Ivy memang bisa membuat lagu dengan beat dan genre berbeda menjadi sangat Ivy dari mulai Let's Go To Bed milik The Cure sampai tembang ternama milik Serge Gainsbourg, L'Anamour.

Pada tahun 2003, Lately EP dirilis kembali oleh Unfiltered Records with the same track-list as original dan di tahun yang sama Worry About You yang telah digunakan sebagai theme song untuk Stephen King series, Kingdom Hospital dan juga sebagai theme song serial TV 4400.

Album terakhir Ivy dirilis pada Maret 2005 dengan judul In the Clear. Di album ini sekali lagi Ivy berkolaborasi dengan James Iha sebagai lead guitar pada lagu Tess Don't Lie. Selain itu, Ivy juga bekerja sama dengan produser/mixer legendaris Inggris, Steve Osborne yang telah bekerjasama dengan band-band papan atas seperti New Order, Happy Mondays, dan Starsailor. The Way To The Market Station

The San Fransisco scene as was told by our contributor, Ryan.

It’s funny coz I never listen to The Beach Boys “Caroline, No” as often as I used to, but everytime I listen to it, it’s like listening to it for the first time. I am still amazed by each striking chord, and the melody still haunts me… great melodies are here to stay. Like those melodies I hear not faraway from the place I live.

The bay area was home for legendary indiepop acts like Tiger Trap, ..Poundsign.., Henry’s Dress, The Softies, and a lot more. I’d say the early 90s would have been the best time to live in the San Fransisco area. With all those bands around, what more you could ask for? It was probably the peak of indiepop madness in the city.

San Fransisco plays host to the once-every-two years Popfest! A Pop fantasy that features indiepop bands from almost around the world. It was also the festival where you could meet familiar indiepoplist subscribers and you’d be surprised to find out where all those people came from. The 2003 popfest was memorable. It was held at The Bottom of the hill at 17th St in San Fran and featured bands like The Lucksmiths, The Radio Dept., Pipas, The Free Loan Investments just to name a few. It was the best fest that I’ve ever been in. Other notable clubs for good indie night fix are The Rickshaw Stop at Fell St, Edinburgh Castle at Geary, and Café Du Nord near Market Street. Parking is horrible in the city so you might as well catch the train to Market Station.

A “Popkid” from the bay area isn’t as different as a normal person as you may think. Some wore band shirts and their chuck t’s to go to a gig. Some wore Sweaters and a backpack full of badges hanging out. Some drank and smoke, some don’t. Some looked like mod revivalists wearing thick glasses, some looked like they just get out of bed and needed a shower. It could be deceiving sometimes. I once saw a lady in her fifties (maybe sixties!!) at a Jens Lekman show, so you’ll never know what you’re gonna see.

Now Berkeley, a few miles East from San Fransisco and approximately 10 miles away from where I live was home to a notable record label named Slumberland Records (now based in Oakland – also home to a very sophisticated and stylish indie label called Radio Khartoum). A punk label called Lookout! could also be found in Berkeley. Some people may remember Lookout! as Greenday’s early record label before they hit it big.

Berkeley in the east bay is a great hang out spot. Particularly Telegraph Ave. Amoeba Records is like heaven to me. Cheap and great stuff. You could find all types or records there and spend hours without noticing how many hours you’ve wasted. Everything is in Berkeley, whatever you fancy. You even meet all kinds of weird people. Walk a few blocks away and you’ll find a great Record store called mod Lang.

When all’s well, after a night on driving the way to Market Station, or even a train back to Richmond from Berkeley, melodies get stuck in my head. Sometimes I dream about these melodies. Singing them when I wake up. Haunting me in a not-so-scary-kind of way. You know what I mean.

How To Make Your Band Infamous

Sering kali kita dengar band-band terkenal/termasyur itu itu mengatakan bahwa mereka nggak merencanakan band mereka untuk jadi terkenal, niat awalnya ngeband cuma buat iseng... eh malah jadi terkenal dan harus menjalani berbagai kesibukan mulai dari manggung & tur di penjuru kota, wawancara dengan berbagai media massa, jumpa fans, sampai menjadi bintang tamu di sejumlah talk show. Kalau niat kamu ngeband hanya untuk iseng dan tidak pernah membayangkan jadi terkenal maka pertahankanlah rencana awal itu. Jangan sampai terjebak dalam rutinitas yang bisa merenggut privasimu seperti di atas. Oleh karena itu, simaklah 15 kunci sukses di bawah ini untuk menjadikan bandmu tetap tidak terkenal.

1. Jangan bilang siapa-siapa kalau kamu ngeband dan kalaupun sampai ketahuan juga, segera beri uang bungkam.
2. Carilah personel dengan tampang kurang sedap dipandang dan tidak caper.
3. Pilihlah nama band dari bahasa asing yang tidak menggunakan alphabet dan pertahankanlah cara penulisan dan pelafalannya.
4. Frekuensi maksimal latihan adalah 3 bulan sekali dan cukup satu jam saja.
5. Sewaktu latihan jangan mengajak teman, jangan mau ditonton siapapun termasuk operator studio dan atur volume sekecil mungkin.
6. Membuat lagu sendiri boleh-boleh saja tapi jangan berani-berani merekam apalagi merilisnya.
7. Punya manager juga boleh tapi carilah seseorang yang kuper dan selalu sibuk dengan urusannya sendiri
   
8. Jangan pernah membuat merchandise.
9. Mainlah di acara musik yang tidak sealiran dengan band kamu.
10. Jadilah kaum average di panggung, jangan tampil memukau maupun tampil buruk, biasa-biasa aja.
11. Di panggung gak usah sebut nama band kamu, nggak perlu pake kata pembuka dan penutup. Cukup terimakasih saja.
12. Setelah turun panggung hindari interaksi dengan orang lain, hangout hanya boleh dilakukan dengan teman satu band.
13. Nyetem alat dan check sound sebelum manggung juga tidak penting dilakukan.
14. Hindari bersosialisasi dengan orang-orang yang suka musik apalagi yang bisa membuat bandmu terkenal.
15. Utamakan belajar dan bekerja daripada band.

Nah, setelah kalian tahu kunci suksesnya marilah kita berlomba-lomba menjadi tidak terkenal!!!
